A PATH BACK TO HERE is a group exhibition showcasing a selection of work by Syracuse University School of Art MFA students Jaleel Blanchard, Markus Denil, and Joseph H. Troxler. This exhibition features artworks completed this spring during Syracuse University’s L.A. Turner Semester Residency Program.
A PATH BACK TO HERE invites you to pause, reflect, and find your way back to a place you may have been before. Through a variety of mediums, these artists explore themes of escapism, self-identification, and social haunting. The artworks are guideposts, illuminating the trail on which we travel. As moments reverberate, our relation to the world we inhabit changes. We’ve been here before, but maybe we’re different now.
Jaleel Blanchard (b. 1997, New Orleans, Louisiana) is painter whose work explores themes of power and identity. His gestural paintings are populated with figures, often including the character known as “Quiet”, an alter ego for the artist. Blanchard’s work gives the viewer a window into a world he has occupied since childhood. Blanchard received his BA with honors in painting from The University of Notre Dame and is currently a second-year MFA candidate at Syracuse University and participating in Syracuse University’s L.A. Turner Semester Residency Program in Los Angeles, California.
Markus Denil (b. 1990, Bridgewater, Nova Scotia) is a queer trans Jewish fag from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in rural Nova Scotia, Canada where he grew up with few rules or limitations as the unruly middle child of two Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University educated artists. He is a transdisciplinary maker and instigator, creating trouble wherever he goes. His intrusive thoughts of existential dread and a persistent restlessness fuel his sense of urgency and productive output. Markus received a BFA in studio art with a minor in interdisciplinary studies in sexuality from Concordia University in Montreal. He is currently working toward an MFA at Syracuse University. Markus’ work has been shown across the US and Canada; most recently he had a solo exhibition at LAST Projects in Los Angeles, CA and was one of the international featured artists at Nuit Blanche YXE in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Markus’ work will be on display in two group exhibitions taking place on Governors Island this spring in NYC.
Joseph H. Troxler (b. 1992, Beckley, West Virginia) is a multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, installation, and painting exploring states of being, manifestations of social ghosts, and the impact of historical systemic control. He received his BA in Commercial Design and Painting from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA in 2018. Joseph is a first-year MFA candidate at Syracuse University’s School of Art and is currently participating in Syracuse University’s LA Turner Semester Residency in Los Angeles, California.
This exhibition and the LA Turner Residency are made possible by the generous support of the SU VPA School of Art and Marylyn Ginsburg-Klaus and Chuck Klaus.
